School board elections Sept. 12, C-M district maps available

Iowa school board elections will be Sept. 12. Polls will be open from noon to 8 p.m. at the Jasper County Fairgrounds in Colfax, and the Mingo Community Center, 200 E. Railroad St. Voters may vote across district lines for any one candidate within a director district.

There will be three Director Districts open on the Colfax-Mingo Community School District Board of Education:

Director District No. 1 – Currently held by Doug Van Dyke.

Director District No. 5 – Currently held by Jayme Lind.

Director District No. 7 – Currently held by Billie Jo Russell. 

The new board member-elects for DD#1, DD#5 and DD#7 will begin a four-year term in September. New legislation extends the term to Nov. 2, 2021, to coincide with city elections.

School board candidates must be an eligible elector and a resident of one of the districts open for board seat.

A map of the director districts Affidavit of Candidacy – must be notarized and filed with Board Secretary Deb Hodgson Nomination Petition – a minimum of 32 signatures is required and must be filed with School Board Secretary Deb Hodgson Candidate’s Guide to the School Election.

The first day that nomination papers can be submitted to Hodgson is Monday, July 10. Candidates must have both their notarized Affidavit and their Nomination Petitions submitted to Hodgson at the high school by 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3 to be considered eligible.

The community, the students, and the school district all benefit when you get involved by attending board meetings, volunteering for school-sponsored clubs such as the Colfax-Mingo Music Boosters, the Parent/Teacher Association, the Colfax-Mingo Athletic Boosters, and any number of committees and classroom activities. Think about all you have to offer your school district, and make plans to serve in any way you can.
