Fire prevention week is Oct. 8-14. The Colfax Fire Department is hosting an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday to help you prepare. From making a plan to the supplies you may need, Colfax Fire Department can and wants to help.
Fire fighters can offer suggestions on types of smoke detectors and how and where to place them. They can also help you with your escape plan. If you want to learn how to operate a fire extinguisher, you can do that. If you ever wondered if you could be a part of the fire department, we can answer your questions. Applications to the department will also be available.
Following the open house Saturday, the fire department will be activating a city-wide fire drill from 6 to 8 p.m. If you hear a fire truck or ambulance siren, execute your escape plan. There may be something in it for you when the department sees you in your safe place.
For the parents of the Colfax-Mingo third graders, we’ve got some home work for you.
On Friday, the fire department is taking the Smoke and Fire Education — SAFE — house to the elementary. We’re going to show the third graders the effects of smoke, how and why you plan two ways out of every room, why the need for a safe place to meet and call 911, after which they bring what they’ve learned home for you to do your homework and make your plan.
Remember, every second counts, plan two ways out.
Save the date, it may be your life you save.
