Darrell Norman Johnston, 77, of Newton, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton. A memorial service officiated by Pastor Melissa Sternhagen will be at 9:30 a.m. tuesday, Nov. 28 at Progress Industries, 1017 E. Seventh St. N. in Newton, followed by a visitation with a balloon ascension ceremony. Burial will follow at the Restland Cemetery in Baxter.
Darrell was born in Marshalltown, March 22, 1940, to Norman and Mary (Heberer) Johnston. He resided in Newton much of his life and worked at Progress Industries. He loved babies and children and spending time with his family, especially at Christmas time. Darrell’s Progress Industries and Jasper County Care Facility staff families who lovingly supported and cared for him for so many years were a great joy to him. He also enjoyed his pet birds, watching airplanes and trucks, hugs and teasing.
Those left to cherish his loving memory are his siblings, Marilyn (Doug) Miller of Solon, Marlys Colyn of Baxter and Dale (Michael Robertson) Johnston of San Diego, Calif.; nephews, Jeff (Erin) Johnson and children, Andrew and Piper, Jim (Tania) Johnson and children, Kai and Cam, Joel (Cindy) Colyn and children, Allison and Trenton; nieces, Jill (Michael) Gilhooly and Janelle (Dwayne) Maasdam and children Zach and Taylor; and his loving Progress Industries family. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; parents; and brother-in-law, Bill Colyn.
